The Amazon

About the Amazon
The Amazon forest has 5,500,000 km² (2,123,562 sq mi). It is huge! This is a picture of the area of the forest.

The Amazon forest is located in South America in 9 different countries. Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana. But the Amazon River only is located in 3 countries. Brazil, Peru and Colombia.

Now I am going to talk about the Amazon River. The Amazon River is about 6,800 km (4,200 mi) long.  The Amazon River is the largest river on the Earth, and it is the second longest. The biggest width of the river reaches up to 60 km, and the smallest is 17 meters. The Amazon River has a lot of biodiversity. It has over 3000 species of fish and scientists continue to discover more species. It has a lot of tributaries. The source is at the Andes Mountains in Peru at an altitude of 5170 meters.  The mouth of the river is at the Atlantic Ocean at an altitude of 0 meters.

Back to the forest. The rainforest has about one third of all the animals in the world. Just to have an idea, it has 2.5 million types of insects. It has been there for 55 million years. The Amazon Forest suffers huge deforestation. 30.000 hectares of trees  are cut down per day. 1 hectare = 10.000 square meters. The trees in the forest measure 15-25 meters. But there are some that approximately reach 50 meters! Well, this was a summary of the Amazon.
